Krośnieński dworzec kolejowy położony jest w centrum miasta w sąsiedztwie dworca komunikacji samochodowej. Zarówno obiekt dworca jak i pozostała (istniejąca) infrastruktura powstała między latami 1880 – 1890 czyli jeszcze w czasach panowania monarchii austro-węgierskiej. Otwarta w 1884r linia kolejowa przebiegająca przez tereny ówczesne królestwo Galicji i Lodomerii na terenie Cesarstwa Austro-Węgierskiego. Linia biegła równoleżnikowo z zachodu na wschód przecinając doliny najważniejszych karpackich rzek stąd też wzięła się jej nazwa – trans versalis co z łacińskiego oznacza poprzeczny.
Potężna jak na tamte czasy inwestycja miała głównie charakter militarny (budowa linii alternatywnej dla głównej linii galicyjskiej Kraków – Lwów). Jej założeniem było stworzenie gęstej siatki połączeń z zachodu na wchód terytorium Cesarstwa na wypadek wojny z Cesarstwem Rosyjskim. Militarny charakter inwestycji nie stanowił przeszkody dla innych korzyści płynących z poszerzenia siatki kolei żelaznej. Najważniejszą pozamilitarną korzyścią był niewątpliwy rozwój gospodarczy terenów przez które poprowadzono linię (słabo rozwinięte w tamtych czasach górskie tereny). Głównymi stacjami kolei transwersalnej były: Żywiec, Nowy Sącz, Jasło, Krosno, Sanok, Chyrów, Sambor, Drohobycz oraz Stanisławów.

The Krosno Transversal Railway Station
The Krosno railway station is located in the city center in the vicinity of the car transport station. The station facility and the remaining (existing) infrastructure were built between 1880 and 1890, that is during the reign of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The railway station in Krosno is one of the largest facilities of this type in Podkarpacie district. It is an important communication junction and the main directions are: Rzeszów, Zagórz (Sanok) as well as Kraków and Warsaw. The railway station in Krosno gained importance when the so-called Transversal Rail Route in 1884 was open.
Transversal Rail Route
The railway line opened in 1884, running through the territory of the then kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The line ran latitudinally from west to east, crossing the valleys of the most important Carpathian rivers, hence its name - trans versalis, which means transverse from the Latin. The investment, huge for those times, was mainly of a military nature (construction of an alternative line to the main Galician line Krakow - Lviv). Its assumption was to create a dense network of connections from the west to the east of the territory of the Empire in the event of a war with the Russian Empire. The military nature of the investment did not prevent other benefits from expanding the rail network. The most important non-military benefit was undoubtedly the economic development of the areas through which the line was led (mountain areas that were not developed at that time). The main transversal railway stations were: Żywiec, Nowy Sącz, Jasło, Krosno, Sanok, Chyrów, Sambor, Drohobycz and Stanisławów.
