Kushiro area used to have flooding of Kushiro River almost every year. Especially in 1920 the city was severely flooded, and big water control national project was started the following year. The project build the water gate at the base of Iwaboki Mountain and split the Kushiro river flow into the New Kushiro river. New gate "Iwabokki Suimon" was completed on 1931. The name come from the Ainu word Iwa Poki which means base of mountain.
The cache is hidden at where the very nice view of Kushiro Wetland is seen.
かつての釧路市街は、毎年のように釧路川水系の氾濫によって大きな水害を受け、街の発展にとって大きな問題であった。
特に大正9年の釧路川洪水は市街一帯が水浸しとなり、これをきっかけとして翌年の大正10年から国の事業による大規模な治水工事が始まる事となる。
その計画とは、釧路川の中流域にある岩保木山の麓に水門を設けて釧路川を分断し、新水路（現在の新釧路川）へ流路を切り替えるものであった。
そして、昭和6年に完成したのがこの岩保木水門である。名前の由来は、アイヌ語のイワ・ポキ（山の下）から。
