Look at the turbulent waters between Cape Maria van Diemen and the island beyond it, Motu o Pao. They help protect the island as a nature reserve against predators that swim, like rats.
The island is home to thriving populations of pupu harekeke (flax snails) and robust skinks, both endangered on the mainland. The island's sandy soil makes it a hotspot for thousands of nesting seabirds.
Motu o Pao (Pao's Island) is named after Pao, an ancestor of the people of this place. He was the elder of twins born on the island.
Plenty of parking nearby - enjoy the view and claim a cache at the same time.
Be careful as this can be a high-volume muggle area in good holiday weather.
Cache is a 500ml plastic screwtop with some camo paint. Room for small swaps.
