Coal is an Sedimentary rock that forms from the accumulation and preservation a plant materials usually in a swamp environment. Coal is a combustible rock and along with oil and natural gas it is one of the three most important fossil fuel's. Coal has a wide range of uses the most important use is for the generation electricity .

This Small 350 Lb chunk of Coal is a Probably the last piece of Coal from the Wyoming Valley, The anthracite industry in the Wyoming Valley reached its peak production while the wartime economy created by World War I was still booming. At this peak of production in 1917, it is estimated that the industry produced a record 100 million tons of coal.

Based on composition and properties Coal is assigned a rank that corresponds to a level of organic metamorphism. Here is the different levels of Coal. LIGNITE .... This is the lowest grade or Rank of Coal it only has a carbon reading between 60 and 70% also known as brown coal. SUB BITUMINOUS .... This grade of coal has a carbon content of about 75% . BITMINOUS ..... This type of coal is known as soft coal it is the most abundant coal , 50% of all the coal mined in the United States is bituminous . ANTHRACITE.... This is the highest grade of coal it has a carbon content over 87% is also known as hard coal .

Anthracite coal is the hardest. It averages 85%-99% carbon content and has the highest heating value of the four types of coal. It is not uncommon to find anthracite that produces well in excess of 15,000 Btu's per pound. The BTU content in solid fuel on the other hand can vary widely. Lignite coall which is lowest grade of coal may only have 14 Million BTU's per ton, the highest quality anthracite can exceed 28 million. You can expect about 24 to 25 million BTU's per ton on average from anthracite coal. This piece of Coal has a BTU of around 4,5550,000 It's been Estimated that this Chunk of Coal can run a Personnal Computer for 2,613 Hrs.
