Nuclear Fallout!
So why the name???
Well as you approach the cache you will see on your left two small white buildings which look quite non-descript however these are access points to an underground nuclear bunker!
Please do not enter the enclosed area these are in as this is private property!
UKWMO Ashwell
This building is known at the UKWMO or the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation and operated between 1957 and 1992 to provide UK military and civilian authorities, with data about nuclear explosions in the event of war. Along with fallout forecasts for various area in the United Kingdom.
UKWMO was established and funded by the Home Office and utilised its own premises which were mainly staffed by the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) – a uniformed full-time volunteer service.
The organisation was wound up and disbanded in November 1992. Subsequently these underground bunkers were sold off.
