Het is februari 2021. De Trekvliet is stijf bevroren. Een oer-hollands tijdverdrijf wordt weer uit de kast gehaald: Schaatsen. Het gevolg hiervan is dat de fuik, die een belangrijk onderdeel was van deze cache, door de plaatselijke jeugd (of iets ouder) is verwijderd. Kortom: De cache in zijn oorspronkelijke vorm is er niet meer. Een tweede versie van de fuik, hangt bij ons thuis aan de muur. We zijn bang om deze weer terug te hangen op zijn oorspronkelijke plaats. Daarom heeft deze cache wél de zelfde locatie, maar een andere vorm gekregen. En daarmee ook een andere naam, die behoorlijk voor zich spreekt:

De paling, ook wel aal of vollediger Europese aal (Anguilla anguilla), is een straalvinnige vis die behoort tot de familie echte palingen (Anguillidae). De soort is een trekvis. Deze bruin tot grijsachtig gekleurde vis heeft een zeer langwerpig lichaam dat meer dan een meter lang kan worden. Door de karakteristieke lichaamsbouw, lage rugkam en nauwelijks zichtbare schubben is deze gemakkelijk van andere vissen te onderscheiden.
En kijk, het gegeven dat de paling een trekvis is, dat maakt hem ook zo bijzonder! Je kunt hem behalve in het water ook op het land aantreffen, en er gaan verhalen dat je palingen zelfs in de lucht kunt vinden. Alles wat je nodig hebt om een paling te vangen is een fuik. Grote fuiken voor grote palingen, kleine fuiken voor kleine palingen (a.k.a. aaltjes - zie daar de relatie met het engelse "eel").
De fuik-cache hebben we gekregen van een échte Scheveninger die, terwijl hij dagelijks op bezoek was bij zijn vrouw in het Verpleeghuis, bezig was met "Schevenings Breien", zoals hij vertelde. Het geheel, ook de Turkse Knopen om de cache-behuizing zijn van zijn hand. Door het plaatsen van deze cache, waarvan hij op de hoogte is, doen we hem, zijn vrouw, en de Scheveningse Vissers van weleer eer aan. De hele constructie vraagt erom om gezien te worden, maar ook om er zorgvuldig en met eerbied mee om te gaan.
Deze cache levert een belangrijke bijdrage om een kleine paling niet in het water, maar "uit de lucht" te vangen. Je moet even om je heen kijken, maar zeker de meer ervaren cachers zullen 'm zonder al te veel problemen kunnen vinden. Speciale tools zijn niet persé noodzakelijk, maar misschien wel handig. Iets van een haak of een korte hengel kan behulpzaam zijn. En een pincet of haaknaald kan je goed gebruiken om bij de logrol te komen. En verder: Deze cache is niet echt goed toegankelijk voor kinderen zonder begeleiding, of voor mensen met een visuele beperking. Het kán wel, maar ik zou het niet doen...
Zorg er wel voor dat je de cache weer "netjes" terugplaatst zoals je 'm gevonden hebt, anders wordt het met dat paling vissen natuurlijk niks!

A second version of the trap hangs on our wall at home. We are afraid to put it back in its original place. That is why this cache has the same location, but has a different shape. The eel, also called eel or more fully European eel (Anguilla anguilla), is a ray-finned fish belonging to the family of real eels (Anguillidae). The species is a migratory fish. This brown to greyish colored fish has a very elongated body that can reach more than a meter in length. Its characteristic body structure, low back crest and barely visible scales make it easy to distinguish from other fish.
And look, the fact that the eel is a migratory fish, that is what makes it so special! You can find it on land as well as in the water, and there are stories that you can even find eels in the air. All you need to catch an eel is a trap. Large traps for large eels, small traps for small eels.
We got the trap-cache from a real Scheveninger who, while he was visiting his wife in the Nursing Home every day, was busy with "Schevenings Knitting", as he said. The whole, including the Turkish Knots around the cache housing, is his work. By placing this cache, of which he is aware, we do honor to him, his wife, and the Scheveningen Fisherman of yesteryear. The whole construction demands to be seen, but also to be treated with care and respect.
This cache makes an important contribution to catching a small eel, not in the water, but "from the air". You have to look around you, but certainly the more experienced cachers will be able to find it without too many problems. Special tools are not necessarily necessary, but they may be useful. Something of a hook or a short rod can be helpful. And you can use tweezers or crochet hook to get to the log roll. And further: This cache is not really accessible for unaccompanied children or for people with a visual impairment. It could, but I wouldn't do it ...
Make sure you put the cache back "neatly" as you found it, otherwise the eel fishing will not work!
