MASON-DIXON TRAIL

The Mason-Dixon Trail connects the Appalachian Trail with the Brandywine Trail. This 199 mile long trail starts at Whiskey Springs on the Appalachian Trail in Cumberland County, PA and heads east towards the Susquehanna River, passing through Gifford Pinchot State Park en route. The trail then follows the west bank of the Susquehanna River south to Havre de Grace, MD. Across the river, the Mason-Dixon Trail continues east, passes through Elk Neck State Forest, then on to Iron Hill Park, DE, north along the Christina River and White Clay Creek to the White Clay Creek Preserve. The trail then heads northeast to its eastern terminus at Chadds Ford, PA on the banks of the Brandywine River.

The section the cache is located on runs south from Broad Creek Public Landing to Glen Cove Marina, a distance of 3.5 miles, then continues south through Susquehanna State Park to Havre-de-Grace. If you are curious about backpacking, this trail is an excellent close-to-home place to give it a try before making a major investment in equipment and time. It is recommended that you wear blaze orange or other bright clothing on the trail from Fall through Spring.

Park Access/Hours
  • Trail is open seven days a week.
  • Not recommended at night, but cache is accessible 24 hours a day.
Cache Info
  • The alternate parking has very limited parking though it is closer to the cache. The road is not private property but do not block houses or driveways.
  • The trailhead waypoint is 0.85 miles from GZ.
  • As you approach GZ, you will pass a bench facing the water below. GZ is about 100 feet off the trail and is below an overgrown rock pile. There is a large fallen tree, facing downhill, covered with moss. The ammo can is under the tree near the root end, covered with rocks and forest detritus. GC is not visible from the trail.
