Kawatiri Coastal and Heritage Trail - Westport to Charleston. The concept was put together in 2015 after lots of feasibility studies and surveying etc to build this 55km track.The Provincial Growth Fund of $9.36million went towards building it and is due for competition in June 2022.
SECTION 1. Puwaha. Westport to Carters Beach, is 5.5km long, 1.5hrs walking time, was officially opened on 6th December 2020.
This trail stretches from the Buller Bridge to Carters Beach gives walkers, runners and cyclists a chance to experience the unique parts of the environment. Information panels and shelters along the way provide insights into the history and ecology of the area. The trail winds through local farmland, an estuary, bird sanctuary, wetlands and historical sites for both Maori and Pakeha settlers
