In 1783, Quaker whalers and merchants primarily from Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island, left their homes to start a new settlement. A group of 30 were named to a committee called “The Proprietors.” They purchased a property called Claverack Landing and laid out the grid pattern for the city which later became Hudson. They set aside the high ground, today known as Promenade Hill, overlooking the river as a "Parade", an open leisure ground for the citizens. In 1785, Hudson became the first city chartered in the newly independent United States of America. Hudson grew rapidly as an active port and came within one vote of being named the capital of New York State.
