Geocache Description:

In 1820s, a local smuggler named Thomas Maynard was attempting to land 24 tubs of spirits at Pevensey Bay, close to Martello Tower 59. There was a company of tubmen waiting near the shore for the boat of contraband, still out at sea. On the beach, beside the Martello stood a sentinel appointed by the Coast Blockade.

The Coast Blockade deployed shore-based sentinels controlled from the Royal Navy.  Sentinels from the Coastal Blockade were moved around, often at short notice, to prevent them colluding with the smugglers. Men were accepted for this work on condition that they had no relatives in the local area.

Martello Tower 59 was demolished in 1903, the location was N 50 48.897 E 000 21.510 (not on this route) there is no visible evidence to show it was there.

Having done the circuit many times and we have doubts about the longevity of the series, due to being in high muggle areas, so discretion and stealth must be exercised at all times.

Carry on along Pevensey Bay Road to collect information for a multi.
