Geocache Description:

The Story

The Op de Tradouw Pass lies on the popular R62 route between Montagu and Barrydale; both towns which attract tourists by the droves and each has its own special mystique and charm. This pass should not be confused with the Thomas Bain designed Tradouw Pass, which lies another 10 kilometres to the east and further to the south of Barrydale. The Wildehondskloofhoogte Pass runs back to back with this pass and together the two passes form one long pass of over 15 kilometres. The Op de Tradouw Pass has an altitude variance of 300m with an average gradient of 1:18 with the steepest parts reaching 1:15. It provides beautiful views of the Tradouw Valley peppered with fruit orchards and dams, with the Langeberg mountains in the background. The pass is modern, well engineered and safe, providing the speed limits and barrier lines are adhered to.

The Cache

The cache has been placed at a location where the old pass meets the new pass. If you look around you will see the old pass criss-crossing the side of the hills as you drive along the new pass. This cache can be found whilst travelling in the direction of Oudtshoorn, ie. away from Cape Town. The turnoff is a very sharp and sudden turn so slow down well in advance. There is limited mobile reception here so you might want to save it offline before you enter the pass.

Route 62, the scenic alternative

Many consider Route 62 as the scenic alternative to the much busier N2 along the coast. Route 62 stretches for more than 500 kilometre from Ashton in the Western Cape to 18 kilometre short of Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape. This cache is part of the series placed on Route 62 to entice people to explore the alternative. So go out and find them all, including the lab cache.
