The number of small triangles in a larger triangular shape is given by N=4n3+10n2+4n-1+(-1)n/16 where n is the number of rows of small triangles within the large triangle. An alternative way of solving this problem is to used N=(n(n+2)(2n+1)-1)/8 when n is an odd number or N=n(n+2)(2n+1)/8 when n is an even number.
