Según la leyenda popular, el origen de este santuario se remonta al siglo XII, cuando un pastor encontró en este paraje la Santa Imagen. Después de llevarla al pueblo, la imagen volvió a aparecer allí hasta dos veces, por lo que se decidió edificarle una pequeña ermita.
El santuario o ermita de Nuestra Señora de Monserrate, también llamado de Santa Mónica, data del siglo XIV, en que se construyó la iglesia en sustitución de la primitiva ermita. En el siglo XVII se reformó la Iglesia y se amplió el recinto con un claustro, la antigua hospedería y la masía que se conservan aún en la actualidad. Del mantenimiento del santuario se encargaba una comunidad contemplativa que daba hospedaje a los peregrinos.
El Santuario fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural (B.I.C.) el 25 de mayo de 1983
According to popular legend, the origin of this shrine dates back to the twelfth century, when a shepherd found in this place the Holy Image. After taking her to the village, the image reappeared there up to twice, so it was decided to build her a small hermitage.
The sanctuary or hermitage of Our Lady of Monserrate, also called Santa Monica, dates from the fourteenth century, in which the church was built in place of the primitive hermitage. In the seventeenth century the Church was reformed and the enclosure was expanded with a cloister, the old hospedería and the farmhouse that are still preserved today. The maintenance of the sanctuary was in charge of a contemplative community that gave accommodation to pilgrims.
The Shrine was declared a Good of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) on May 25, 1983
