Geocache Description:

Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) is one of three infantry regiments of the Canadian Armed Forces. The 2nd Battalion (2PPCLI) was based out of Kapyong Barracks (here at this location) from 1956 until it moved to CFB Shilo (east of Brandon, Manitoba) in 2004.

Kapyong is named after the Battle of Jiaping (Battle of Kapyong), which was fought during the Korean War between the invading Chinese People's Volunteer Army and United Nations Command forces (primarily Canadian soldiers from 2PPCLI, along with armies from Australia and New Zealand). The Chinese plans to attack and recapture Seoul were foiled due to the well-trained Canadian and Australian infantry soldiers who never gave up even though they were heavily outnumbered.

The Patricias are named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, the daughter of Arthur William Patrick Albert. Albert was a former Governor General of Canada (1911-1916) and a son of Queen Victoria. His official title was Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. Albert succeeded Earl Grey as Governor General. Princess Patricia was the regiment's Colonel-in-Chief until her death in 1974. She played an active role in the regiment and even personally designed its badge and colours.

After the move to Shilo, the former Kapyong land (approx 65 hectares) was declared surplus. Demolition work was held up for 15 years, until 2019, due to litigation. To learn how the land will be developed, check out www.treaty1.ca/Kapyong.

This cache won't last long, so get it while you can, as Kenaston Blvd (Route 90) is also scheduled to be widened to address current and future traffic volumes.

Interesting trivia: Regina's Western Hockey League team is named after PPCLI. The "Patricias" shortened their name to the Regina "Pats" in 1923, and still wear the PPCLI patch on the shoulder of their hockey jerseys.
