Geocache Description:


Kawatiri Coastal and Heritage Trail — Westport to Charleston.  The concept was put together in 2015 after lots of feasibility studies and surveying etc to build this 55km track. The Provincial Growth Fund of $9.36mil went towards building this track which is due for completion in June 2022.

Section 1 -  Puwaha   Westport to Carters Beach was officially opened on December 6th 2020, is the first of 9 sections to be built is 5.5ks and takes 1.5hr to walk one way.. This section stretches from the Buller Bridge to Carters Beach, gives walkers, runners and cyclists a chance to experience unique parts of the local environment. Information panels and shelters along the way provide insights into the history and ecology of the area.        The Trail winds through local farmland, an estuary, a bird sanctuary, wetlands and historical sites for both Maori and Pakeha settlers .

Kawatiri  “swift deep water”  is the Buller River which is flowing past here.

Cache is a small camo with log only, BYO pen. Please ensure that it is securely returned to its position.
