Kawatiri Coastal Trail —. Westport to Charleston
The concept was put together in 2015 after feasibility studies, surveying etc etc to build this 55km track and $9.36 mil from the Provincial Growth Fund, is due for completion in June 2022.
Section 1 — Puwaha — Westport to Carters Beach is the first of 9 sections to be built and officially opened on 6 December 2020, is 5.5km long, 1hr 15 min walking time. Trail gives walkers, runners and cyclists an chance to experience unique parts of the local environment. Information panels and shelters along the way provide insights into the history and ecology of the area. The Trail winds through local farmland an estuary, bird sanctuary, wetlands and historical sites for both Maori and Pakeha settlers..
