Born: 20 June 1933 – 1 August 2016
Known for: David William “Dai” Dower was a British, Empire and European Flyweight boxing champion, who was one of the most successful Welsh boxers of all time. His amateur career saw him selected for the team of Great Britain at the 1952 Summer Olympics in the boxing squad. His professional career was illustrious with many victories, however Dower's plans were interrupted when he was called up to the army to do his two years National Service. In December 1956 he was ranked 2nd in the world, before his boxing career wound down.
Bournemouth Connection: Shortly before his final fight he took up the position of sports master at Ringwood Grammar School in Bournemouth. He became head of sport at Bournemouth University, a position he held for twenty one years, and in June 1998 he became the recipient of an MBE, awarded for his years of teaching sport to children. Dower lived in retirement in Bournemouth.
Series Information: This is one of 10 geocaches in the Bournemouth People (2021) series. Nine caches are stand-alone traditional caches. Each cache found will provide one of three bonus clues, which will reveal the coordinates for the tenth mystery cache. With only three clues to collect, you do not need to find all the caches in this series in order to have the information for the final, so if you are unable to find one, you should still be able to get the coordinates required. For the purpose of this series, please note that the bonus clues are numbered ‘Bonus Clue 4’, ‘Bonus Clue 5’, and ‘Bonus Clue 6’, to avoid confusion with caches found in other Bournemouth People series.
