Geocache Description:

The Howe House is the home of Lake Region Audubon Society and Street Audubon Center. The house, built of cypress wood, is over 80 years old. Luella Street donated the house and 42 acres on Lake Ned to the Audubon Society in the 1970s. Mabel Howe donated money to move the building to its present location. Leashed dogs are permitted on trails; bicycles and horses are not. In case of severe fire conditions or other emergency, the gate may be locked.

The Lake Trail provides an opportunity see water birds along the edges of Lake Ned. A resident gopher tortoise can sometimes be spotted. A variety of birds frequent the canopy of trees that shade the trails. Butterflies visit the gardens near the Howe House. The Center is on the Great Florida Birding Trail. Two trails run through the sanctuary - one along the edge of Lake Ned and the other along the high dry ridge and the large butterfly garden. Visit www.floridabirdingtrail.com for more information.

Volunteers keep the grounds open to the public Monday - Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 3 P.M. The center is usually closed on Sundays and holidays. There are several miles of trails for your enjoyment. All of the trails are shaded and offer the hiker an easy and relaxed experience. Some trails may be too wet during the raining season. Tours of the Howe House can be arranged by calling 863-324-7304. The facility is available for special events such as business meetings, school reunions, presentations, etc.

Permission to place this cache was granted by Reinier, President of the Lake Region Audubon Society

This is a Letterbox Hybrid cache. For anyone not familiar with Letterboxing, there is a log in the cache for you to sign and stamp (with your stamp), then you stamp your own log or paper (with stamp that is in the cache). If you do not have your own stamp, then stickers or hand drawn artwork are acceptable or if you do not have your own stamp, you can just sign the log. DO NOT TAKE THE STAMP WITH YOU; IT IS NOT A TRADE ITEM!!!

This geocache is a part of the Trek Ten Trails 2020-2021 program. Participation in that program, while a lot of fun, is not required to log this cache.
