Halfpenny Lane was an old toll road and the toll was - surprisingly - a halfpenny!
While walking along the lane keep an eye out for Old Rib Farm. There is a rib fastened onto the wall above the door. Local legend has it that it is the rib of a giant cow which roamed the area giving milk freely to everyone. One day a witch came along and asked the cow to fill a riddle (sieve) full of milk. Ashamed that it couldn't fill the riddle, the cow died and may or may not now be buried at Cow Hill in Grimsargh.
