Geocache Description:

Duke

Royalty: A duke (male) can either be a monarch ranked below the emperor, king, and grand duke ruling over a duchy or a member of royalty or nobility, historically of highest rank, below princes of nobility and grand dukes.

The title comes from French duc, itself from the Latin dux, 'leader', a term used in republican Rome to refer to a military commander without an official rank (particularly one of Germanic or Celtic origin), and later coming to mean the leading military commander of a province.

In most countries, the word duchess is the female equivalent. However, in some countries (such as the UK), the term duke is used even for females, and the word duchess is reserved for those who marry dukes.

Some famous Dukes (Non-Royal):

  • Duke Ellington (1899-1974), American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra.
  • Duke Snider (1926-2011), Hall of Fame MLB outfielder and 8-time All-Star.
  • Patty Duke (1946–2016), Actress who played Neely O'Hara in Valley of the Dolls.
  • James A. Duke (1929-2017), American botanist and author of the CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs.
  • James B. Duke (1856-1925), founder of American Tobacco Company and known for his involvement with Duke University.
  • Geoff Duke (1923-2015), British multiple motorcycle Grand Prix road racing world champion.
  • Doris Duke (1941–2019), African-American gospel and soul singer.
  • Charles Duke, (1935-), Apollo 16 astronaut who was the tenth person to walk on the moon.
  • Uncle Duke, (1974-), Fictional character in the comic strip Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau.

School is out, now go find that cache.   It begins at the posted coordinates.

There are 2 intermediate stages and a final.  Bring your smartphone.

Note: final location is not available from the freeway, so do not attempt an approach from US-71 '

1st Caution: Do not stand in or search from the paved street at any of the stages.

2nd Caution:  If you attempt to do this cache when the parking lot is empty.......beware the security guard will notice you and will have your car towed.  You are easily noticed in the dark with headlights on.  During normal working hours you may appear to be just another employee, and ignored.  I've parked in this lot many times with no notice, but this evening, in the dark, only after 2 minutes, the guard was walking around my car and getting ready to have it towed.
