Historic Manitou Springs

Adams Crossing In the late 1800s, wounded Civil War Union soldier Charles Adams established his residence on open land northwest of the Colorado Avenue bridge over Fountain Creek. From his front porch, Adams would have had a view of passing horses, pedestrians, and streetcars traveling between Manitou Springs and Colorado City through this narrow gap.

Charles Adams Before Highway 24 was built in 1968, Colorado Avenue was the main road between Colorado City and Manitou Springs and, via Ute Pass, to points beyond. Early in the 20th century, the up-and-coming automobile changed the country. In the 1920s, Adams Crossing became a vital link in the new Pikes Peak Ocean-to-Ocean Highway system, the shortest automobile route connecting the east and west coasts. Motels and campgrounds were established near Adams Crossing to accommodate the exploding number of automobile travelers. Now, 100 years later, many remain in operation -- El Colorado Lodge, Santa Fe Motel, Rainbow Lodge, and Stonewall Park campground (now known as Garden of the Gods RV Park).

For the past several years, crews have been working to revitalize the Adams Crossing area. With the work completed, the time has come for a commemorative cache.

The cache is at N38 51.CSC W104 53.ANS
