Mad Jack’s Morris has danced in and around Hastings, East Sussex, since its formation in 1976. They dance what is known as “Cotswold Morris” as a joint side - so teams of men and women go out together but the dances are performed by either the men or the women.
Mad Jack’s is named after a local eccentric, Mad Jack Fuller who was the Squire of the village of Brightling during the 18th century. In his day he built many follies including the “Sugar Loaf” which features on our badge. He was also the local M.P. and a philanthropist most famously employing out of work soldiers at the end of the Napoleonic war to build a wall around his estate, thus giving them work and saving them from destitution.
Mad Jack’s Men wear all white, with red and gold baldricks with the team badge on the front and back. Their large bell pads, arm bands, and black top hats are adorned with ribbons in the cinque ports colours red, gold, and blue.
Mad Jacks Morris were responsible for reviving Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green in 1983. You might like to try out the related local cache Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green (GC91MWW)
