Vensterberg summit is at 1309 meters asl. The hike is one of the favorites in the George area, with stunning 360 degree views in all directions. It is slightly adventurous, and with a fair amount of elevation and some scrambles involved. Personally, I compare it with Lions Head in Cape Town.
Once you crossed the road from the parking to the trail head, the path is easy to follow.
As you get near the Tolberg cache, you will find a path veering to the right. This will lead to Vensterberg. Just before the summit of Vensterberg, there is a peculiar gap in the rocks, allowing a view towards the sea and Mossel Bay in the background.
Once at the radio tower and summit beacon, you will nead to decent about three meters on the other side to be able to get to the cache.
- Do not hike alone.
- Take enough water (2L minimum)
- Wear adequate hiking shoes / boots.
- Take warm clothing ( weather change quickly in the mountains)
The hike there and back should take you between 4 and 5 hours, depending on the number of photo stops you take.
