Crayford’s Waterside Gardens provide a landmark community park and public realm overlooking the River Cray. With funding from the Homes & Communities Agency, the park was landscaped and modernised between 2009 and 2011, rejuvenating a previously underused space.
The park is designed to celebrate Crayford’s industrial history, set within with striking modern forms depicting the silk screen printing, represented by the David Evans prints and the production of arms and armaments, notably the Vickers Vimmy.
The footbridge and liberty entrance now lead passers-by towards a sculptural pavilion, an interactive water feature, a coffee shop with sun terrace and a performance space with amphitheatre seating. The park is now an important and inspirational space for everyone to enjoy and gives the town centre a perfect focal point. The project has also inspired complementary works at Tannery Gardens and Shenstone Park, which have helped illustrate the many aspects of Crayford’s industrial history in vivid detail.
Crayford Waterside Gardens was opened by Boris Johnson in June 2009.
