PKawatiri Coastal and Heritage Trail. Westport to Charleston. The concept was put together in 2015 after lots of feasibility studies and surveying etc to build this 55km track. The Provincial Growth Fund of $9.36 million went into building this which is due for competition in June 2022.
SECTION 1. Puwaha - Westport to Carters Beach is 5.5km. 1.5hr walking time was officially opened on December 6th 2020.
The trail gives walkers and cyclists a chance to experience unique parts of the local environment. Information panels and shelters along the way provide insights into the history and ecology of the area. The trail winds through local farmland, an estuary, bird sanctuary, wetlands and historical sites for both Maori and Pakeha settlers.
Cobblestones mark the inner edge of a large, old estuary where tall forest once survived and Maori pulled up their waka within a sheltered lagoon.
