The Old Ford.
This is one of several "Sudwala" caches. Its accessible by sedan car, motorcycle or walking(ample place to park). There is no entrance or guide fee to be paid. I was fortunate enough to grow up in and around this area back in the early 80's and I am always filled with nostalgia not only for my past but also for the rich history and wonderful stories that this place has to offer.
This Old Ford Truck and its cement mixer is no exception and well worth a stop. In 1965 Mr. Philip Owen Senior bought Sudwala farm on auction on the advice of his oldest son Theo Owen, that it could be developed into a tourist attraction. Mr. Owen, a blacksmith by trade and then a Pretoria based excavation contractor, was determined to build a road up to the cave entrance, to make it easier for visitors to get up. With the help of his youngest son Philip and many local workers, they took on the challenge. The road was surfaced with tightly packed cobblestones carried up from the river at the bottom. Then just using this cement mixer and water truck from the second world war, cement was laid down to make a smooth durable surface. The project took over three years to complete.
