The Kingdom of Underworld is one of the long-lasting kingdoms of royalty that have existed in secret since the earliest ages of mankind.  In Greek mythology, the Underworld was actually a kingdom where Hades, Zeus’s brother, ruled as king.

Journey to the Underworld

Once a person dies, their soul moved on to the Underworld.  Before that, however, they embarked on a journey.  Hermes, the messenger god, would lead them to a place that was near the Underworld’s entrance.  There, a boat waited.  This ferry was rowed by Charon, the infernal boatman tasked with taking the souls of the dead to the Underworld proper.

Only those who could pay the fare with coins placed on their eyes or under their tongue when buried, were granted passage.

After the boat ride, the souls entered through the gates of the Underworld; the gates were guarded by the ferocious three-headed dog Cerberus (see “Myths and Legends – Cerberus” GC8JEAA), the gatekeeper, who allowed everyone to enter, but none to leave.

If the judges deemed that the souls were worthy, they would move on to the Elysian Fields, which is where those who were “good” would end up.  Life in the Elysian Fields was pleasant and rather happy.  The rest would go to the fiery, unpleasant part of the Underworld where they would experience torment for the rest of eternity.  So, even though the Underworld was simply a resting pace for souls, people were judged according to how they lived, which would determine how comfortable Eternity would be.

The Underworld was divided into at least four regions: Tartarus (reserved for the worst transgressors), the Elysian Fields (where those who were “good” would end up), the Fields of Mourning (for those who were hurt by love), and the Asphodel Meadows (for the souls of the majority of ordinary people).

The unburied or those without the means to pay the boatman were condemned to wander the Earth as ghosts.
