Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches which are placed at or near village halls and community centres. For details and statistics visit the Village Hall Series website Click here

History of Copsale Hall

In the early part of the 20th century, the owners of Copsale Court lent a field for the local workers to play football and cricket. Subsequently a second-hand hall was purchased and transported by train from Peckham Rye to West Grinstead Station and was opened on January 1st 1907 as a working men’s club.

During the Second World War the hall was used by the Armed Forces and, at one time, was a canteen for the Canadian Troops billeted in the area.

After the war the management of the hall was taken over by a committee of the local people who organised whist drives, socials and jumble sales. The hall was also hired out for private functions and was used as a base for the Women’s Institute and County Library. Youth clubs have been run at the hall at various times since 1949.

Electricity was introduced in 1946 replacing oil lamps, and in 1950 a new room was added at the rear. Supply of water was added in 1950 and brick toilets were built in 1985.

In 2015 the hall became a Community Asset and in 2017 was registered as a charity. Further improvements have been made at the rear of the hall in recent years and currently the roof is undergoing repair/replacement.

You are looking for a 1.4 litre clip-lock box with logsheets double boxed within it. There is plenty of room for TBs and swaps

The cache is also placed adjacent to the Downs Link bridleway and so also forms part of our personal Downs Link series, created with cycling in mind. It can of course be found on foot though, from wherever you may begin or end your caching journey, you will probably need to return along the same route or use 2 cars, leaving your second at another point along the trail.

We have created a list of this series including caches set by other owners nearby along the Downs Link trail. We add new caches to the list as they are created :)

More general information about the Downs Link and our series, including a range of potential parking locations, can be found on Downs Link - Garden Centre? which is the first cache of the group heading north from West Grinstead Old Station, recognised as the midpoint of the Downs Link bridleway.
