La escuela actualmente esta permanentemente cerrada. El cache esta fuera de la escuela.
En la Jefferson (como le llamamos los locales) fue donde curse la intermedia. Alli hice la mayoria de los que actualmente son mis amigos y logre reconectar con otros que por razones de la vida ya no compartiamos. Tantos bellos recuerdos al recorrer mentalmente sus pasillos y recordar con amor mis tiempos de adolecente. Por la juventud y la celebracion recuerdos de esta es que coloco este cache.

Historia de la Jefferson
A finales del XIX existía dónde hoy está la escuela Thomas Jefferson una escuela pública que, naturalmente en tiempos de España tendría otro nombre. La estructura estaba formada por dos plantas construidas en madera. El ingeniero Manuel Guillán recuerda esa edificación a principios de éste siglo XX, como de mampostería, pero con balcones en madera y teniendo la entrada principal por uno de sus lados y no por el frente. En la década del 1920, la Dra. María Cadilla de Martínez fue principal del plantel.
Una actividad que se celebraba a diario y revestía de mucha seriedad era la "jura de la bandera". Esto lo hacían los estudiantes formando filas de acuerdo a los distintos grados. Después del juramento que se hacía en el idioma inglés, los alumnos se retiraban a los salones. Los viernes eran siempre días especiales y la banda de la escuela la cual era dirigida por el profesor de música Don Puro Jirau, tocaba la marcha de entrada. Esta banda formada por estudiantes, tocaba también en otras actividades escolares y en las fiestas patronales. Los viernes se celebraba también otra ceremonia conocida en inglés como: "el opening". Cada semana la presentación era realizada por un salón distinto y consistía en programas variados de bailes, recitaciones, canciones y dramatizaciones cortas. Además, se desarrollaban concursos de oratoria (más en el idioma inglés que en el español), así como concursos de poesías, canciones, ensayos y cuentos escritos por los estudiantes. Estos concursos se celebraban entre distintas escuelas de Arecibo y de otros pueblos.

The school is currently permanently closed. The cache is outside the school.
At the Jefferson (as we the locals call it) was where I attended middle school. There I made most of those who are my current friends and managed to reconnect with others that for reasons of life we no longer shared. So many beautiful memories as I mentally walk through its corridors and lovingly remember my times as a teenager. For the youth and the celebration of my memories of that stage in live is why I place this cache.

The Jefferson School history
At the end of the 19th century there was another school where today is the Thomas Jefferson School. It was a public school that naturally in Spaniard times should have had another name. The structure consisted of two stories made of wood. The engineer Manuel Guillán remembers that building at the beginning of this 20th century as made of masonry, but with wooden balconies and having the main entrance on one side and not on the front. In the 1920s, Dr. María Cadilla de Martínez was the principal of the campus.
An activity that was held daily and was very serious was the "pledge to the flag." This was done by the students forming lines according to the different grades. After the pledge that was done in English, the students retired to the classrooms. Fridays were always special days and the school band, which was led by the music teacher Don Puro Jirau, played the entrance march. This band, made up of students, also played at other school activities and at "fiestas patronales". On Fridays there was also another ceremony known as "the opening". Each week the presentation was performed by a different classroom and consisted of varied programs of dances, recitations, songs, and short dramatizations. In addition, public speaking contests were held (more in English than in Spanish), as well as poetry, song, essay, and short story contests written by the students. These contests are held between different schools in Arecibo and other towns.
