La place de la Planta tire son nom du mot "plantation". Au Moyen-Age se trouvaient ici les vergers de l'évêque. Le 13 novembre 1475, elle fut ensuite un lieu de bataille avec la fameuse bataille de la Planta durant laquelle les sédunois victorieux vont repousser les ennemis savoyards. Elle sera ensuite place de foire, terrain de football (premier terrain de football du FC Sion dès 1909) et zone de parking. Puis, sous cette place lors du creusement du parking souterrain dans les années 1980, des vestiges archéologiques du Néolithique sont mis au jour et attestent de la présence d'une population sédentaire. Ce qui fait de Sion l'une des plus anciennes villes de Suisse avec ses 7’000 ans. La place de la Planta est aujourd'hui la place cantonale des grands rassemblements. Une réflexion est en cours pour son futur réaménagement.
Der Plantaplatz hat seinen Namen von dem Wort "Plantage". Befanden sich hier im Mittelalter die bischöflichen Obstgärten. Am 13. November 1475 war es dann ein Ort der Schlacht mit der berühmten Schlacht von der Planta, bei der die siegreichen Seduner die savoyischen Feinde zurückschlugen. Danach war er ein Festplatz, ein Fußballplatz (der erste Fußballplatz FC Sion von 1909) und ein Parkplatz. Unter diesem Platz wurden dann beim Ausheben der Tiefgarage in den 1980er Jahren archäologische Überreste aus der Jungsteinzeit ausgegraben, die die Anwesenheit einer sesshaften Bevölkerung bezeugen. Damit ist Sion mit 7'000 Jahren eine der ältesten Städte der Schweiz. Der Plantaplatz ist heute der kantonale Platz für große Versammlungen. Es wird über seine zukünftige Sanierung nachgedacht.
