Geocache Description:

You are looking for an ammo box.

Note: cache hint updated and cache replaced: Nov 2, 2009
This is a wilderness cache located along the Cumberland Trail. The most interesting approach to this cache is from the Tank Springs trailhead along Big Creek just north of La Follette ( N 36° 23.277 W 84° 7.543). The cache is about 3 miles from the trailhead. The trail follows an old railroad bed through Big Creek Gap and passes under the railroad and then climbs steeply through rhododendron up to the top of the escarpment -- a quick gain of 900' in elevation. The trail offers views of the Tennessee Valley and the Cumberland Mountains to the north. The trail runs along the edge of the escarpment often on the upturned sandstone strata. This is a strenuous hike so bring lots of water and don't forget your camera.

An alternate starting point or shuttle point is the Eagle Bluff Road (4WD). The cache is about 3 miles from Eagle Bluff. Traveling east from Eagle Bluff to the cache, the trail passes a rock window.

If you're more ambitious, you could hike from Tank Springs all the way to the Devil's Racetrack overlooking I75 and down by Bruce Creek triple falls to Shelton Hollow (9 miles) or the Bruce Gap trailhead (11.7 miles). This cache was approved by cumberlandtrail.org. For more information on this section of the Cumberland Trail visit www.cumberlandtrail.org/cumberland.html

The trail follows the boundary of the Royal Blue Wildlife Management. Area. During the fall deer hunting season, you are supposed to wear 500 sq inches of hunter orange in the WMA. At least wear bright colors and try not to look like a deer. Visit the TWRA site for hunting schedules.

Downloadable GPS coordinates for other interesting geological features can be found at Tennessee landforms.
