Ok folks - been a wild winter in our house - will replace cache box in May if we can't get to it sooner. . . . if anyone gets some nice pics of falls after a great rain, you can email me at paula@werme.8m.net
I lived in Buffalo, NH for 11 years of my life, split in two segments - six years as a child, and five years as an . Until only a few years ago, it was the longest I had lived in any one geographic area. So, excuse me if I say these falls are slightly misnamed; I have certain prejudices about what constitutes rainbow falls, size wise. Also, the REAL "Rainbow Falls," a/k/a "the Canadian falls" or "the horseshoe falls," gets a whole lot more sun than this site, which is in typical NH woodland, so it's much more likely to produce a rainbow.
As for THIS "Rainbow Falls," first my father-in-law, and then my husband and family lived just over the hill to the north of this wonderful area. While we had a nice piece of land ourselves, we occasionally bushwhacked our way down the hill to visit the falls and beaver pond on the brook. The owners have since deeded it to the Town of Plymouth, to be used as a nature area, so there's no need to keep it a secret any longer. There's a little kiosk at the trail head, and a trail loop to the falls and back the other side of the brook. It's perfect for a short hike, cross country ski (south side if you're a novice, or the north trail loop if you're more experienced), or snowshoes. And, it beats bushwhacking through the muck! It's about a half a mile to the falls from the road. Despite the difficulty rating, it would be a fine hike for small children, with the only big hill from the bottom of the falls up about 75 feet to the cache.
Off of Route 3 South of Plymouth, take Cummings Hill Road west to the first sharp bend to the left. The signs for the nature area are imediately on the right. Follow the trail past the kiosk to the falls, and then backtrack 100 feet or so, and cross to the north side of the brook. You should see a sign at N 43.43.801, and W 071.41.940 pointing to the trail up the hill to the top of the falls. It's dangerous to try to bushwhack up the hill with small children. We tried to put the cache high enough that it is still available through the winter, but this IS New Hampshire, so we're making no guarantees.
