周辺は密柑山（みかんやま）と呼ばれる地域です。ミカン畑として利用される丘陵地であったことから、少なくとも明治時代にはすでにこう呼ばれていたようです。町内の小学校には町名にちなんで、ミカンの木が植えられています。
漢字表記は『密柑山』が正しく、『蜜柑山』ではないので注意が必要です。
This area is called Mikan-yama which means Orange Hill. The area was called so at least as early as the Meiji era as it was a hilly area used for orange orchards. In the elementary school nearby, there is a orange tree planted in honor of the town's name.
