Geocache Description:

Grade I listed Temple Newsam House is set in extensive grounds, around four miles to the east of Leeds city centre. The original house was built in the 1500s. Prior to this, the land had been held by the Knights Templar who farmed the lands and ran a Preceptory here

The house was extensively remodelled in the mid-18th century, with some parts of a 17th century rebuild being retained, and at the same time the grounds were extensively landscaped by Capability Brown. During the Great War the house was used as a hospital. In 1922 the house was sold to Leeds City Council by the then owner Edward Wood, and the grounds were opened to the public the following year. The estate has contracted over the last 100 years or so, the peripheries being nibbled into by a sewage works, a council golf course and more recently the M1 extension. In the second half of the 20th century much of the land, including Capability Brown's landscaping, were chewed up by an open cast coal mine, no traces of which now exist.

Of course, the cache is not at the posted co-ordinates. It can be found at N 53° 47.ABC W 001° 27.DEF, where:

A = 45th
B = 14th
C = 36th
D = 42nd
E = (1st - 7th)
F = 25th

Checksum = 20

The above information can be readily obtained at the posted co-ordinates. Beware: trying to look up the numbers online might result in an error in your calculations.

The cache is magnetic and is (hopefully!) hidden in plain site, just a short walk away. Please return as found. Good luck.

Placed with the kind permission of the Temple Newsam Estate. For more comphensive information you can visit at the Temple Newsam website.

Congratulations to Mel&Freddie17 for their FTF.
