Geocache Description:

Location:

The beautiful view of Lake Wendouree takes in an historic fountain. The rustic crown shaped fountain was constructed in 1879 to commemorate the location of Ballarat’s first water supply. The lake was originally known as Yuille’s swamp with water being cleaned through filter beds in a small dam. The water supply ceased in 1864 when the lake could no longer supply the growing population. Approximately 60m from shore there is also a multi tiered fountain which propels water 12.5m into the air and is equipped with a colour changing lighting system and three spray head styles. The current fountain is similar in design to the lake’s original Centenary Fountain which was installed in the same location in 1980 by the Ballarat Water Board to celebrate its 100th Anniversary. A popular playground can also be seen nearby.
