Geocache Description:

Flag of Chad

The national flag of Republic of Chad is a perpendicular tricolour containing (left to right) of a blue, a gold and a red turf. Chad Flag is always compared with the flag of Romania. These were intended to be a blend of the colours of blue, white and red resembling the Flag of France with the Pan-African colours of green, yellow and red. Further, the blue signifies the sky and hope; the gold is the sun and desert, and the red indicates the bloodshed over independence.

The flag was approved by law no. 59/13 for the independent republic and reserved on independence in 1960, and in the constitution of 1962. Despite much political confusion within Chad since independence, the flag has not been altered. Flag of Chad signifies hope, sun and peace for the nation.

History of Chad Flag

The flag of Chad was initially accepted on November 6, 1959. The flag was approved when the nation was an independent republic, and the design was left complete after it gained its freedom the following year. Despite several political matters throughout the years since its acceptance, the flag has continued unchanged. The country has even had problem with Romania because the two states’ flags are closely identical. However, neither republic has opted to select the design of their flags.

Furthermore, when French West Africa was under foreign rule, little was complete to develop a sense of nationality; stress was on the nation and political and economic systems of France. The individuality movement in Africa in the mid-20th century consequently found Chad, like most other lands, with few precedents for founding its own symbols. When the Republic of Chad was announced on November 28, 1958, it had no national flag; the French Tricolor still hovered through the country. During the following months contemplation was given by a lawmaking commission to a seal and flag. Its endorsement, made on June 30, 1959, was for a perpendicular tricolor of green-yellow-red.
