History of Belize Flag

From 1950 onward, an unsanctioned national flag was in practice. It was blue; with the coat of arms on a white disc in the centre. In 1981, Belize gained its freedom and a competition was held to design a national flag for the republic. The winning proposal consisted of the unsanctioned national flag used by the People's United Party with a red border supplementary to all four sides. This was altered to a red border on just the top and bottom formerly the design was officially adopted.

Belize Flag Design and Symbolic Meaning

Flag of Belize was adopted in the year 1981. Before the approval, the flag has gone through several modifications to deliver the right and patriotic message. The colors on the flag are belongs to the country's national parties, the People's United Party (PUP) and United Democratic Party (Belize) (UDP).

The two red stripes at the top and bottom are the new modification made in the design after independence. However, the coat of arms was granted in 1907. The Latin motto “I flourish in the shade” is a reference to forests and its establishment was added to the flag, which was later omitted in 1907. In 1964, the current government unofficially flew the flag over public buildings. However, on Independence Day, a revised national flag was officially hoisted.
