Geocache Description:

Drinking fountains date back many centuries, but a real boom in their popularity did not happen until the late 19th century. Many cities welcomed the installation of these plumbing fixtures that could deliver a dose of cool, fresh water instantaneously-including Milwaukee.

So where did the term "bubbler" originate in Wisconsin? There are many theories, but none of which have been proven completely true. There is a story of Harlen Huckleby (Kohler employee) who coined the term in 1888, but Kohler was not in the plumbing fixture business at that point in time. The Kohler Company's drinking fountain manuals did make mention of a self closing "bubbler valve" in 1914. Predating that; Milwaukee newspapers refer to drinking fountains as "sanitary bubblers", "fountain bubbler" or "water bubblers". Those prefixes fell away by the early 1920s and the term bubbler has been popular in Wisconsin lingo for better than 100 years now.
