Geocache Description:

When you ask most people in Paintsville, Kentucky, who the city’s most notable people are, most will name Chris Stapleton, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, John C.C. Mayo, or Jenny Wiley.  Others may say F.M. Stafford (and family), Hylo Brown, Paul B. Hall, Tyler Childers, Willie Blair, or Johnnie LeMaster.  However, a very important person to the history of Paintsville that rarely, if ever, gets mentioned is Henry Dixon.

In 1812 Henry bought land on Paint Creek at auction, and in 1814 he built the first house in Paintsville on the west end of town and north of what is now Third Street.

In 1834 Paintsville was established as a town after Henry laid out and sold lots from the land he owned.

Henry and his wife are buried in what is known as the Old Town Cemetery in Paintsville.  This cemetery has also been called Dixon Cemetery because the very land it is on is part of Henry’s land he bought at auction then laid out the town on.

While the more well-known people from Paintsville and Johnson County are very important to our county and city, Henry Dixon is responsible for establishing Paintsville. He should be noted as one of Paintsville’s most-notable people!
