VESONTIO,
Oppidum des Séquanes est une ancienne cité gallo-romaine aujourd’hui le centre-ville de Besançon qui se situe en fait à l’intérieur d’un méandre du Doubs.
Après la prise de Vésontio en – 58 avant JC par Jules César, la cité devient un carrefour d’axes de communication important. En effet, de Vésontio, on peut se diriger vers des destinations comme Luxovium (Luxeuil), Andeman (Langres), Kembs, Lousonna (Lausanne) et Lugdunum (Lyon).
Durant cette période, Vésontio se développe et on y trouve ainsi des arènes, des thermes, un Champ de Mars (aujourd’hui Chamars), des temples, des marchés ainsi qu’un aqueduc pour alimenter la cité en eau. En 175 après JC, la Porte Noire fut érigée.
Les Arènes quant à elles sont les vestiges d’un amphithéâtre romain construit au Ier siècle. Installées sur la rive du Doubs à ’opposé de la cité. L’amphi mesure environ 125m de long. Sa structure est une inspiration des arènes de Nîmes et de Tours. Ses dimensions lui permettent d’accueillir environ 20 000 personnes.
Au IVème siècle il est désaffecté est sert de carrière de pierres pour les constructions de l’Eglise de la Madeleine, de l’Hôpital Saint Jacques ainsi que des fortifications Vauban. Aujourd’hui sur la partie plate se trouve un parking de Wstationnement.

VESONTIO
"Séquanes’s oppidum" is an ancient Gallo-Roman city, now the city center of Besançon which is actually located inside a bend in the Doubs.
After the capture of Vésontio in - 58 BC by Julius Caesar, the city becomes an important crossroads of communication. Indeed, from Vésontio, we can go to destinations like Luxovium (Luxeuil), Andeman (Langres), Kembs, Lousonna (Lausanne) and Lugdunum (Lyon).
During this period, Vésontio developed and there were arenas, thermal baths, a Champ de Mars (now Chamars), temples, markets as well as an aqueduct to supply the city with water. In 175 AD, the Black Gate was erected.
The Arenas are the remains of a Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century. Installed on the bank of the Doubs, opposite the city. The amphitheater is about 125m long. Its structure is an inspiration from the arenas of Nîmes and Tours. Its dimensions allow it to accommodate around 20,000 people.
In the 4th century it was abandoned and was used as a stone quarry for the constructions of the Madeleine Church, the Saint Jacques Hospital and the Vauban fortifications. Today on the flat part is a parking lot.
