The Okegawa Hikogakko(Flying School) Peace Memorial Hall was opened in August 2020 as a facility for praying for peace, using the building of the former Kumagaya Army Flying School Okegawa Branch School. The Okegawa Branch of the Kumagaya Army Flying School was established in 1937 as a branch school of the Kumagaya Army Flying School, which opened in Kumagaya City in 1935. Many students who gathered from all over Japan lived under same roof here and learned piloting an airplane in order to become an army aviator before heading off to war. By the time the school closed in February 1947, a total of more than 1,500 airmen have bad trained here and many of them went off to war where they lost their lives. After the war, the buildings of the Okegawa Branch School were used as a municipal housing for repatriates, but the guard building, garage building, company building, lavatory building and ammunition depot were designated as a cultural assets of the city in 2008 and the construction to restore and to maintain these buildings was done from 2008 to 2020. The airfield on the other side of the river is the site of Kawataya Airfield which was built as the training facility for the Kumagaya Army Flying School when the Okegawa branch of the school opened. Now it becomes the Honda Airport.
桶川飛行学校平和祈念館は、旧 熊谷陸軍飛行学校 桶川分教場の建物を活用し、平和を祈念するための施設として、令和2年8月に開館しました。
熊谷陸軍飛行学校桶川分教場は、昭和10年に熊谷市に開校した熊谷陸軍飛行学校の分校として昭和12年に設置されました。
各地から集まった生徒はここで寝食を共にしながら、陸軍航空兵になるための飛行機の操縦訓練を受けました。 ここで訓練を受けた飛行兵は昭和22年2月の閉校までに1,500人以上に上り、それぞれ戦地へと向かい、多くの若者が命を落としました。(施設前の看板ご参照)
戦後、桶川分教場の建物は、引揚者のための市営住宅として使用されましたが、平成28年には、守衛棟、車庫棟、弊社棟、便所棟、弾薬庫の5棟が市の文化財に指定され、平成30年から令和2年にかけて、これらの建物の復元整備工事が行われました。
なお、対岸にある飛行場は、かつて熊谷陸軍飛行学校 桶川分教場の開校に合わせて、同校の演習施設として造営された川田谷飛行場の跡地ですが、今はホンダエアポートになってます。
