Geocache Description:

This is a mystery geocache. I will consider you a traitor if you go to the posted coordinates!

While most of us recall learning about Benedict Arnold, I was surprised to read about Dr. Benjamin Church, one of the prominent leaders of the Sons of Liberty, trusted by Joseph Warren, Sam Adams, John Adams, and Paul Revere. By early 1775, he began selling information to General Thomas Gage, commander in chief of the British forces in America, in the form of coded letters. One of those letters was found and brought to the attention of General George Washington. On October 3, 1775, General Washington and his leading advisors met at headquarters to discuss the suspected treason of Church. Dr. Church admitted to writing the coded letter but claimed he did it to get intelligence from the British army for the Continental Army. (National Park Service)

After the discovery of his espionage, Church faced an army court martial. Because Congress had not yet authorized the hanging of spies, Church evaded the death penalty and was instead charged with treason, convicted, sentenced to life in prison, and held in solitary confinement. After Church became ill in prison, Congress ordered him exiled to the West Indies in 1780. In a twist of fate, the schooner upon which Church was being transported never reached its destination. The schooner, its crew and Church were never located.
