Kauzmann Trail Spur

Kauzmann Trail (aka Rasmussen-McLaughlin Trail) is one of those hidden gems which offers a huge reward for relatively minor effort. Depending on where you park / the type of vehicle you have it can be as short as 2km or as long as 10km. Following the path it is roughly 2km’s to the summit. The look off from the peak is a breathtaking 360 view of the surrounding areas.

Geology

The dominant feature of northern Cape Breton is the Cape Breton Plateau, averaging 350 metres at its edges but rising to more than 500 metres at its centre. The Cape Breton Plateau is part of the worn down Appalachian mountain chain which stretches from Georgia to Newfoundland. Extending over 70% of the park, the plateau appears flat-topped but actually consists of broad, gently rolling hills, deeply cut by steep-walled river canyons and broad valleys.

On the west coast the plateau meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence in steep cliffs. On the east, the highlands border the Atlantic Ocean in a more gently sloping coastal plain with low headlands and a few long sandy beaches.

Kauzmann Trail Spur is a ridge on the top of an old piece of the Appalachian mountains.

Mountain Spur or Ridge

A spur is a lateral ridge or tongue of land descending from a hill, mountain or main crest of a ridge. A spur is a short, continuous sloping line of higher ground, normally jutting out from the side of a ridge. A spur is often formed by two rough parallel streams, which cut draws down the side of a ridge. The ground sloped down in three directions and up in one direction. Contour lines on a map depict a spur with the U or V pointing away from high ground.

A truncated spur is a spur, which is a ridge that descends towards a valley floor or coastline from a higher elevation, that ends in an inverted-V face and was produced by the erosional truncation of the spur by the action of either streams, waves, or glaciers. Truncated spurs can be found within mountain ranges, along the walls of river valleys, or along coastlines.>

A faceted spur is also a spur that ends in a triangular face, known as a triangular facet, with a broad base and an apex pointing upward. As typically used in geology, the triangular facet is usually a remnant of a fault plane and its associated faceted spur are the result of faulting. The term faceted spur is also applied to inverted-V rock faces formed by stream, wave, or glacial erosion and, thus, as a synonym for truncated spur.
