Black History Month
With the trauma in North America exacerbated by the global pandemic, we have more time to reflect on what is really important. As a keen follower of the Toronto Raptors and the NBA, I am acutely aware of the double standards in how we treat each other. My Mom used to say: Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it true? This small series is my tribute to Black History Month (BHM). Cache is peanut butter jar w/swag. While this cache does not meet the recognized standard of "Winter Friendly", it nevertheless can be found in winter!
BHM: Willie Eldon O’Ree CM, ONB
No salute to Black History Month in Fredericton would be complete with acknowledging Willie O’Ree probably the most recognized name in New Brunswick Black History. Willie was the first Black to play in the NHL with the Boston Bruins.
He grew up in Rabbitt Town plat and attended St. Anne’s Chapel of Ease. Tour guides are proud to point out that a young Willie wrote his name on the pew in the back row, probably so he wouldn’t get caught!!
His accolades and honours are many; NB Sports Hall of Fame – inducted in 1984
Order of New Brunswick – 2005
Order of Canada – 2008
Hockey Hall of Fame – 2018
In January 2021, the Boston Bruins announced as part of Black History Month, they would retire Willie’s #22 in a ceremony 18 February 2021 and hang it in the rafters of TD Boston Gardens, the greatest honour for a hockey player.
