Celabrating St. Johns County's 200th Birthday July 21 1821
This is the Arboretum at the Amphitheater in St Augustine. Kind of a locals' secret and an amazing nature hike. These trails use to be the entrance to the original Cross and Swords Amphiteater starting in the 1960's. Created as a place to perform live plays portraing the landing of Menendez in 1565 on the coast of Florida, there were other plays like Tom Sawyer, A Christmas Carol and even some musical events. After a 32-year run, the final curtain call for Cross and Swords was in 1997. In 1999, the Board of County Commissioners and Parks and Recreation acquired control and started a reconstruction of a historical community center. The trails remain, and you can still see evidance of the ponds, waterfalls and an old remains of the water wheel.
