Geocache Description:

A series of duck related caches with various views of Kouris Reservoir. All the ducks have been seen in Cyprus although not necessarily in this reservoir. We recommend that you start at number 1 as all the parking, caches and views are on the left hand side of the road. The view varies according to the amount of rainfall there has been. Children should enjoy this series but as it is along the road they will need adult supervision.

There are several views of the abandoned church of St Nicholas and its bell tower along the route. The church was once a central hub in the old village of Alassa – a place abandoned (and built at a higher elevation) when the Kouris dam was built in 1988. In rainy winter months, when the reservoir fills up, the church is submerged in water, with just the tower visible from above the water.

Kouris Dam is the largest dam of a network of 107 dams in Cyprus. It is located in the Limassol District and is fed by the Kouris River along with other smaller watercourses including the Diarizos River which has its water diverted to Kouris Dam via an underground pipeline.

MALLARD

The mallard is a medium-sized waterfowl species that is often slightly heavier than most other dabbling ducks. The breeding male mallard is unmistakable, with a glossy bottle-green head and a white collar that demarcates the head from the purple-tinged brown breast, grey-brown wings, and a pale grey belly. The rear of the male is black, with white-bordered dark tail feathers. The bill of the male is a yellowish-orange tipped with black, with that of the female generally darker.
