This cache is part of an occasional series about Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The cache is not located at the posted coordinates.
Pi (π) is an irrational number. The Babylonians started calculating the area of a circle as long as almost 4000 years ago. Archimedes performed the first calculation of π over 2200 years ago and demonostrated that π is between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71. Although William Jones introduced the Greek letter π, Leonhard Euler popularized it. Over the centuries, many people calculated additional digits of π.
Emma Haruka Iwao is the first woman to hold the record for calculating the most digits of π. She’s a Japanese computer scientist who currently works at Google in Seattle.
This Women in STEM puzzle is a little different than previous ones. It consists of a “crossword” puzzle though in this case all of the answers are numerical digits so the clues are “lettered” rather than numbered. Solving the puzzle will yield the coordinates to the cache. The checksum for the solved coordinates is 57. The cache is in the park (some maps of the park show otherwise), please observe park hours when finding the cache.
Update: as of August 14, 2021, more digits of pi have been identified. Unfortunately, that means the website used for one of the items in this puzzle no longer contains the answer which is 774728936.
