Established in 1967, the Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary consist of 164 acres covering a wide viriety of habitats including hardwood clearings, pine forest, a fresh water lake, a swamp, a dune system and gulf beaches. Through different times of the year 95% of all birds found in Alabama can be found here on Dauphin Island. This sanctuary is listed in the top 4 of North American birding destinations and in the top 10 of the world as important sites for bird migrations.
One of the strangest of birds that can be found here is the Great Southern Cacher. Oft times seen in their natural habitat circling a tree, embracing a stump or thrashing about in a thicket. The Great Southern Cacher exhibits an extreme adventurous spirit and is an odd bird indeed.
