Chances are, if you have lived in Manitoba for a few years, you have been to a Manitoba Social. I have been to dozens. The Manitoba Social is a great way to raise money - be it for the engaged couple looking to offset some wedding expenses or a sports team trying to raise money for new uniforms. The Social is truly unique to Manitoba. Mention that you are 'going to a social' to anyone outside of Manitoba and you may be greeted with a blank stare or a quizzical look.
Back when I was attending socials - almost every weekend, it seemed - socials were an inexpensive and fun way to spend an evening with friends - drinking, dancing and eating. Admission tickets were $2.00, drink tickets were 5 for $3.00 and raffle tickets were $1.00 for an arm's length of tickets. There was only ever one raffle prize - a bottle of 'perfume'. It was illegal to raffle off alcohol at the time. From the opening strains of "Knock Three Times" until the dulcet tones of Englebert Humperdink singing "I'll have the last waltz with you.", everyone was up dancing. We would polka, twist, butterfly and bunny hop and wouldn't sit down until the food was brought out around 11:30 p.m. Kubasa, Kub's rye bread, cheese squares, pickles and Old Dutch Ripple chips - predictable but delicious.
The building here is now a Bingo Hall but in my youth it was the site of many a Social and some great memories.
UPDATE: The original building has been replaced with a new office/bank type building. The cache has been moved to a new location.
