Geocache Description:

Tree Trivia - "The Ents Are Going To War!"

Trees actually look out for each other. For instance, some tree species can release airborne chemical signals to each other to warn them about incoming threats like insects. Their closest neighbours then produce tannins, which make their leaves taste bitter to approaching predators. Those airborne signals can also work in other ways, by attracting predators or parasites that kill an invading pest. A 2013 study found that apple trees under attack by caterpillars can release chemicals that attract caterpillar-eating birds.

Finding The Cache

If you are coming from cache 4 in the series, the coordinates for this cache will take you to a fork in the forestry road on the way back towards Limerigg village. The branch off the main forest road ends abruptly after a couple of dozen yards. The woods around here were home to several coal mines, which is why there were so many mineral railways. The area at the published coordinates is the former location of Limerigg Collery Pit No.3.

The cache container is around 21 metres due West of the published coordinates.

Remember to identify the leaf type on the letterbox stamp, so you can find the bonus cache, using the table shown on the cache page for caches 1 or 7 in this series.

Please leave the letterbox stamp, stampbook, and inkpad in the cache for the next cacher.
